Shourabit Batata mah Adas (Potato-Lentil Soup)

1 pound ground lamb or beef
1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup lentils, washed and drained
10 cups water
3 medium potatoes
1 1/2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Saute meat and onion in oil in a large saucepan until meat changes color. Add lentils and water. Cover and cook until lentils are tender, about 45 minutes.

Add potatoes, salt and pepper. Cook until potatoes are tender.
