Frequently asked questions

What stories do you put on the Web site daily?

We post the top five Mid-Columbia stories, the editorials and the top Mid-Columbia sports stories daily. In addition, we post various features throughout the week, including the twice-monthly wine column by Bob Woehler, the weekly business cover stories and a few others. Once a week, we post the death notices.

When do you post the stories?

Stories usually are posted by about 1 a.m. Pacific Time. Occasionally, they aren't posted until 9 a.m.

Where can I find the letters to the editor and records items?

At this time, we do not make any of these features available on our Web site.

How can I find older stories?

We archive all top Mid-Columbia stories. Currently, that archive begins in 1997. In addition, we post all stories we print about the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, the U.S. Department of Energy and nuclear-related issues. These can be found at the Hanford News site. The stories are updated five days a week.

How often are the classified ads updated?

Classifieds are updated daily. All classifieds that run in the print edition automatically run in the Tri-City Herald Online.

Can I place a classified ad online?

Yes, go to the classified home page and click on "Send us your classifieds."

Can I buy a display ad on the Herald Web site?

We sell display ad space on our Web site. The cost is not prohibitive. For information, send e-mail to Kim Di Vico.

How many "hits" does the Herald Online get?

An average is difficult to define because the traffic on our site continues to grow. For instance, in June 1996, our first full month on the Web, we had about 90,000 hits. In July 1997, we had about 415,000 hits. In 1998, the Herald Online served up 7.5 million hits. In 1999, we had nearly 12 million hits. While hits aren't exactly the most accurate way to measure visitors, our site is fairly low on graphics, so the hits-to-pages served ratio indicates to us that about 40 percent of our hits are pages served.

Why don't you have more graphics on your site?

Our philosphy from the beginning has been to provide information as quickly as possible. On the Web, that means cutting down on the graphics so pages can load more quickly. While we've strayed from that philosophy a little in some areas, we have tried to stick with it as much as possible. E-mail we've received indicates many folks who come to our site appreciate the speed.

If I have a question or problem, how do I tell the Herald?
