Newspapers in Education
The history of NIE
The NIE program began more
than 60 years ago when a group of newspapers committed to education
and young people in the community got together. They wanted to train
teachers to use the newspaper as a tool to teach that state's mandated
standards. The first teacher's manual was published in 1929 and in 1939,
the Milwaukee Journal sponsored a contest for newspaper activities from
teachers. The results were published as a text covering all content
areas. In 1957, a selected team of Iowa teachers attended the first
summer workshop and created a planned newspaper in education program.
NIE was born!
NIE is a worldwide program
that promotes the use of newspapers in the classroom. Newspapers can
be used to teach math, social studies, economics, geography, the environment,
art, and language skills. Reading newspapers helps students improve
their ability to find information, identify main ideas in paragraphs,
improve critical thinking skills, improve proofreading ability and link
students to the world.
NIE supplies sponsored newspapers
and educational materials to schools, adult literacy programs and youth
detention centers. Over 700 newspapers across North America provide
NIE programs. Although desired results are uniform, no two NIE programs
are alike in the education or service provided and materials offered.
The NIE program is also found in over 20 nations and has developed an
international network.
Many teachers and students
have found NIE to be an exciting and rewarding program.
The Tri-City Herald began
its NIE program in 1988 and provides newspapers to 80 schools and 251
classrooms.
