More on the spring of 1999 in the Mid-Columbia
By Brett Allen

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Simple soccer. That's all it came down to for the Pasco soccer team Saturday as they won their first-ever Class 4A state championship 2-1 over a heavily favored Evergreen team at Kiggins Bowl.
Pasco was the the team from the East side that wasn't supposed to be able to play well on artificial turf, let alone beat the undefeated hometown heroes in what essentially was their house.
The Bulldogs were happy to make believers out of all those that doubted them.
"I can't even describe how great it feels," said Pasco captain David Hileman. "We were picked to make it to the championship and play them and lose to them 2-1, and we did just the opposite. We got stuff done and just played ball."
Pasco coach Sean Esteruizen thought that Evergreen may have underestimated his team after the Plainsmen watched the Bulldogs nearly give away their semifinal match against Snohomish on Friday.
"Yesterday, they came at the tail end of our game when we were really struggling against Snohomish," Esterhuizen said, "So I think they really thought they were gonna kill us."
The Bulldogs made it clear from the beginning that they were not going to lie down and let Evergreen walk over them. They played focused for most of the match, utilizing speed, precision passing and good old-fashioned hustle to dispense with the Plainsmen.
"It was beautiful. It was the best soccer they played all year, and it was against one of the best teams," Esterhuizen said. "Everybody decided to play simple soccer. We ran for everything and tried to win every single ball."
Hustle earned Pasco its first goal in the 28th minute when Daryl Kelly found the net after a Skyler Allen shot was deflected in front of the Evergreen goal.
Kelly snuck his way to the left side of the goalie box where the ball was waiting for him to put it away.
"I just tried to hustle down and stay behind the play, and I was just there to stick it in," Kelly said.
Pasco went into the locker room at the half with the momentum and a 1-0 lead, then stormed its way out, ready to claim its title.
"We got really pumped up for the second half and came out hard and starting winning every ball," said Pasco's other captain Mike Pardini. "Andy Duvall played awesome winning headers for the midfield."
The Bulldogs displayed their ability to pass the ball in the second half, despite not being used to playing on artificial grass.
The Bulldogs' second goal was a text book play that saw Allen take the ball in the middle of the field and make a perfect pass over to Hileman who was about 20 yards in front of the goal.
Hileman took notice of Pardini who was trailing the ball and dropped him a soft pass to his left. Pardini took the ball in full stride with a Plainsmen defender on his hip and booted a chest-high shot into the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead.
"It was a picture perfect goal," said Hileman who got his 10th assist of the season. "It's a big field and we like to spread them out and bring them back in. It's a different game (on turf) so we had to adjust a little bit but we adjusted and did great."
Added Esterhuizen, "The running off the ball, the passing and the touch made it seem like we had been playing on turf all of our lives."
Evergreen tried to make a comeback with a goal in the 60th minute, but the Pasco defense was there to protect the lead when the Plainsmen made their final surge.
The Bulldogs found it hard to put their feelings into words after the final whistle blew. Some shook their heads in disbelief, while others quietly reflected on the moment.
Assistant coach Kyle Vierck, who runs the Bulldog defense, sat on the Pasco bench staring at the field overcome with emotion as the rest of the Pasco team celebrated with the crowd.
"Kyle has worked so hard," Esterhuizen said. "He's been a key ingredient. He bridges that gap sometimes between me, as an older coach, and these young kids. He has a feel for the game that sets him apart."
Esterhuizen had to deal with some of his own emotions before the title game. "I didn't want to play this game today," he said. "I was so nervous. At lunch time I wanted to go home and have the season over. Now I want it to last forever."
RICHLAND WINS 4A STATE TITLE
By Jim Riley

VANCOUVER, Wash. - The comeback kids have done it again.
With a state championship on the line, Richland rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4.
Then, in dramatic fashion, sophomore Grant Richardson doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to help Richland win the 1999 Class 4A state baseball championship Saturday.
Richardson, who hit his school-record 11th home run earlier in the game to pull Richland within 4-2, drove a fastball to the base of the right-field fence to score pinch runner David Hall with the final run to beat Hudson's Bay 5-4.
"I knew he had to come to me, that I would get a fastball," Richardson said of his game-winning double. "I just came through and tried to drive it to the opposite field."
Richland, which came back to win three of its final four games to cap a sparkling 23-3 season, fell behind 4-0 to Hudson's Bay after an inning and a half.
Richland junior starter Shane Anderson gave up all four runs and then shut down Hudson's Bay the rest of the way on only three hits.
"I was holding back a little bit at the beginning," Anderson said. "I was really struggling at first and finally just decided to give it everything I had. I started getting some outs and that's what we needed."
Richland crept within two runs in the bottom of the fourth on Richardson's home run, but it still trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. With only three outs left, the Bombers also were at the bottom of their order.
Bill Tierney led off the inning with a hard groundball to shortstop that Joel Suguitan threw completely out of play for a two-base error. Aaron Harper then doubled home one run to pull Richland within 4-3.
After an out, David Gonzalez singled home the tying run.
"It's just the nature of our team to come back," Gonzalez said. "This is unbelievable to win a state championship like this. There's nothing better than to do it this way. This is the greatest feeling in the world."
In the bottom of the eighth inning, catcher Doug Thornton singled with one out, and Richland coach Ben Jacobs put Hall into pinch run.
Jacobs put Hall in motion, and Richardson lined the double to right.
Hall never slowed down, jumping jubilantly into a pile of waiting teammates at home plate.
"I knew as soon as I saw the right fielder's number (heading toward the outfield wall), I knew that we were going to win," Jacobs said. "David Hall is the fastest kid in the school and he never slowed down. I raced him from third base to home."
Jacobs admitted he was concerned as his team came to the plate in the seventh inning.
"I was beginning to wonder if this was meant to be," Jacobs said. "Even if we had lost, I still would have believed that this is the best team in the state. All of a sudden, everything came together."
Hudson's Bay, playing at its home field but the visitor on the scoreboard, scored one run in the first inning and then three more in the third to give starter Brian Fadling a lead.
Fadling, a junior right-hander, held off Richland with a steady diet of curveballs in the early going.
He pitched into the seventh inning but was lifted by Hudson's Bay coach Curt Daniels after Tierney got on board to lead off the seventh.
"I'll tell you, it's a good thing they give you seven innings," Jacobs said. "If we would have had only six we would have lost the game."
After accepting the championship trophy, the Bombers and their many fans who made the trip lingered around the field. Several players scooped up small jars of dirt from the infield as a keepsake.
Richland first baseman Steve Mortimer said all the comebacks the Bombers have had this season made it easier for the players to believe once the game reached the seventh inning.
"You dream of coming back to win a game like this," Mortimer said. "I won't lie to you and tell you that I wasn't worried. We really felt like we were the best team and this is really a big monkey off all our backs."

Special to the Herald
Thanks to some great pitching, the Richland Bombers softball team is headed back to the state tournament, but they'll need to remember their bats, as they forgot to bring them to Saturday's regional tournament.
The Bombers managed just four hits in their two losses, losing 1-0 to Shadle Park and 3-0 to Lewis & Clark at the Region IV tournament at Columbia Playfield in Richland.
Richland also beat Wenatchee 6-2 to clinch a berth to state, where it will be the region's No. 4 seed.
University blanked Shadle Park 6-0 in the championship game to take the regional title. In other action, Big Nine district champ Walla Walla was eliminated by Wenatchee 6-1, and Central Valley ousted Southridge 6-5, as the Suns' seventh-inning rally fell just short.
Richland pitching ace Kelli Smith was dominating, going the distance against both Shadle Park and Wenatchee. Smith picked up the win against the Panthers, striking out 13 over seven innings, and struck out the side in three separate innings. She ended the tournament with 2013 innings pitched, striking out 29, allowing just 11 hits and two earned runs for a miniscule ERA of 0.88.
However, the Bombers weren't able to give her much offensive support, especially against Shadle Park.
Highlanders starter Jessica Murray shut Richland down, surrendering just three hits.
Richland was able to get a rally going in the third inning, with runners on second and third with no outs.
But Murray retired the next three batters to end the threat, and she retired the last 15 batters she faced.
The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the seventh, when Shadle Park's Ashley Lynn tripled with one out. She scored the game-winning run on Andrea McGrath's fielder's choice.
The Bombers came back in the next game against Wenatchee, erupting for six runs in the sixth inning as six different players collected an RBI.
Kathryn Peoples went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Richland, and Ashley Richards added a pair of singles.
Bombers coach Dale Hill elected to start junior Stephanie Odom in the final game against Lewis & Clark.
"Kelli was dead-tired after the Wenatchee game," said Hill. "And we felt Stephanie could do it. She's pitched well for us, and she did a good job today."
Odom was solid over six innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run.
A pair of Bombers errors led to the Tigers' other two runs.
"That's happened all year to her," Hill said of Odom. "We just don't give her any offensive or defensive support."
Bombers catcher Peoples wasn't happy with her team's play, either.
"We really didn't play like we should have, especially hitting," Peoples said. "The pitchers we faced were good, but we know we can hit them."
Despite its disappointing showing Saturday, Hill knows what his team can do at state. "If we come to play, we're going to be tough," he said. "All the girls are winners, and they know what needs to be done."
