CBC women tip WWCC in East opener

The pizza was just 50 cents at Columbia Basin College, but revenge was the special of the night in Pasco as the CBC men's and women's basketball teams opened NWAACC Eastern Division play Wednesday night against Walla Walla Community College.

The Hawks and Warriors squads reversed the fortunes of early-season matchups as the CBC women posted a 69-50 win while the men suffered a 103-85 loss.

At the Walla Walla Classic in early December, it was the CBC men who won and the women who lost.

The Hawks women used a strong perimeter game - shooting 50 percent from both inside and outside 3-point range - to offset WWCC's size advantage and outscore the Warriors 38-22 in the second half to start division play with a win.

"I thought our kids played well. (Walla Walla) had a lot of experience and size, but we were determined to stop their inside game," said CBC coach Cheryl Holden. "Our defensive pressure in the second half caused some key steals and points in transition."

Sunnyside's Nikki Sabedra led the way with 20 points, hitting 8 of 16 shots - including 4 of 9 from beyond the arc - but not before the Warriors took an early lead.

All-NWAACC forward Kasey Hooter scored eight straight points in a four-minute span to put WWCC (8-4) ahead 17-11 with 10 minutes gone in the game.

"We didn't get enough ball pressure or help on defense," Holden said of the WWCC run.

But Sabedra answered with two 3s and a layin off an assist from Richland's Lindsay Selle as CBC (5-8) tied the score at 21. Whitney Royer - who scored 11 points coming off the bench - hit three treys before the half ended as the Hawks began to find the range.

"Royer off the bench just killed us, and Sabedra hurt us. They are just an incredibly quick team," said Warriors coach Bobbi Hazeltine after watching her team shoot just 31 percent in the second half.

Richland grad Bethany Such scored nine of her 11 points in the second half.

WWCC MEN 103, CBC 85

The CBC men simply ran into a buzzsaw as the Warriors found success both inside and outside, shooting a torrid 76 percent from the field in the second half - 62.5 percent for the game.

Post Robert Pankowski torched the Hawks for 31 points on 13-of-14 shooting.

"We couldn't shut them down defensively. At halftime, I told them we had to locate their shooters and limit second shots, but they came out and hit six more 3s," said CBC coach Lane Schumacher after the Hawks shot a respectable 45 percent from the field. "Obviously we have to learn from this. It's hard to find anything to be proud of."

Chris Ortiz led CBC (3-10) with 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting. He sparked hopes of a comeback with several driving layups - including four straight in the first half to pull the Hawks within 32-30. However, the Warriors limited the Pasco grad's second-half opportunities and CBC's well ran dry.

"This was Chris' second game back, and he really stabilized the point," Schumacher said. "We need to get others involved."

The Hawks were down just 46-40 at halftime, but Pankowski scored eight points in a four-minute span as the Warriors (7-5) took a 57-46 lead and never looked back.

"This was a big win for us, because a lot of teams are going to come in here and get beat. This is a tough place to play," said WWCC coach Jeff Reinland. "We started four freshmen, and we learned what we're capable of. When they defended the 3, Robert got some easy looks at the basket."
