All-state teams

By the Herald staff

There was one more award left for Kiona-Benton senior McKenzie Burgess.

Burgess was the unanimous choice as Most Valuable Player on the inaugural Class 2A all-state volleyball team, one of eight all-state teams announced Wednesday.

The teams were selected by a panel of sportswriters from around the state and coordinated by Tri-City Herald preps editor René Ferrán.

"That's awesome," said Burgess, who signed with Washington State shortly after leading the Bears to the state title. "This just adds to everything that's gone on this season."

Sharon Brandon, who retired as Ki-Be's coach after the season, was selected as coach of the year, while junior middle blocker Nichole Boyer was a second-team honoree.

Richland junior midfielder Brittney Dugger was named co-MVP of 4A girls soccer, sharing the honor with Kentlake midfielder Shuree Hyatt.

Unlike Kentlake, which was eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs by eventual runner-up Cascade (Everett), Richland finished third at state led by Dugger, the Big Nine Player of the Year who scored a conference-leading 22 goals.

"All the recognition that's rolled in for her, from conference player of the year to All-Area MVP to this, really reflects her total commitment to the team," said Bombers coach Chris Smith. "Individual honors weren't her priority; her focus is on contributing to the team. It's just a bonus that all the individual recognition came along."

Joining Dugger on the first team was teammate April Wickersham, a senior defender, while Bombers juniors Tai Swallow (midfielder) and Morgan Ingersoll (forward) joined Pasco senior defender Michelle Elliott on the second team.

Other first-team soccer selections from the Mid-Columbia were Hanford seniors Kari Pierce (forward) and Karla Meeks (defender) on the 3A squad and Connell sophomore Lauryn Koelzer (forward) on the 2A team. Second-teamers were Prosser's Cassy Smith (forward), the Mid-Valley Player of the Year, and Hanford's Holly Krzan (midfielder) and Laura Higby (goalkeeper) in 3A and Connell's Kaci Eppich (defender) in 2A.

Walla Walla senior Jamie Eggers, the Big Nine Player of the Year, was named to the 4A first team. Columbia-Burbank senior Lindsay Idler, the SCAC East Player of the Year, was a second-team selection in 1A.
