Athletes of the Week

Week 1

Marshal Smith, Pasco football

Smith has had to take on a few more responsibilities this season, but once the senior wide receiver/defensive back overcomes his pregame jitters, he turns in an A-plus performance.

"Having more on me makes me more nervous, but it makes me step up and be a leader," Smith said. "I lost sleep over the Richland game and I couldn't eat. I was nervous. This year, I'm on offense and defense and I'm expected to make plays."

Smith made a lot of plays against Richland, catching nine passes for 181 yards, including touchdown passes of 5 and 57 yards from quarterback Skyler Allen as Pasco defeated the Bombers 21-16 in the Big Nine Conference opener for both teams.

Defensively, Smith, 17, had a fumble recovery in the second quarter, an interception and broke up several Richland pass plays.

"It was fun, and it will be fun the whole season," Smith said. "I have to come out and make plays or peope will think I'm just a one-gamer."

Alicia Arriaga, Connell soccer

Arriaga scored the first three goals of the game and finished the match in goal as the Eagles defeated Toppenish 9-0 in the CWAC opener for both teams.

"I played in goal the whole second half," Arriaga said. "I played a little goalie last year, but not much. (Against Toppenish) it wasn't too fun back there. I didn't get to stop any shots."

Arriaga scored her first goal four minutes into the contest, then scored again two minutes later. She scored her final goal at the 18-minute mark.

The 5-foot-5 senior forward, who had a team-high 15 goals last season, has four this year, plus one assist, for the Eagles (1-1 CWAC).

"It gives me a lot of confidence," she said of her three-goal game. "I'm hop-ing to beat my scoring from last year."

Arriaga, a first-team all-CWAC player last season, said she would like to play soccer in college but has not gotten any offers.
