Kennelly misses on record lift

When Ryan Kennelly held 805 pounds above his chest on Saturday afternoon, he said it didn't feel heavy.
But the fit of his bench press shirt pulled his arms down toward his stomach instead of letting his arms bring the bar to his chest, limiting his best lift of the day to 710.7 pounds at the APA-WPA World and Regional Bench Press Championships at Celebrity Bowl and Casino in Kennewick.
"I'm seven pounds bigger than I was the last time I competed and that makes the shirt fit wrong," said Kennelly, who missed on an all-time world bench press mark of 805 pounds on his final lift. "It was too tight across the chest."
A 1992 Kamiakin graduate, Kennelly, 28, holds a nonsanctioned world bench press record of 801 pounds. He plans to try again for a sanctioned world record four weeks from now in Reno, Nev.
Kennelly, a personal trainer in Moses Lake, drew praise from 20-year powerlifting veteran Randy Patterson, 54, of Pendleton, who set a masters super heavyweight APF world bench record of 617 pounds in June.
"I appreciate him," said Patterson, who in 1991 won a world title when he squatted more than 900 pounds, deadlifted more than 800 and bench pressed more than 500. "He's a humble guy that gets the job done and doesn't run his mouth."
Patterson, a guard at the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton, made good on his opening lift Saturday of 55612 pounds and on his second of 57812. He just missed on a WPA record of 611.7.
Benny Dooley, 50, of Kennewick set a WPA world record for the 50-59 age group with his first lift of 50112 pounds, shattering the record of 440 pounds. Dooley's record now stands at 529 pounds.
Darris Piggee of Kennewick broke his own WPA record in the men's 40-49 division at 198 pounds, pressing 52312 pounds. The old mark was 510.
The APA-WPA Deadlifting Championships begin at 10 a.m. today at Celebrity Bowl and Casino.
