Kamiakin grad could soon get call to the Show

Keep an eye on Tampa Bay possibly trading first baseman Fred McGriff.

If McGriff is dealt, whether it's to the Chicago Cubs or someone else, it may open up a spot for for Kamiakin High standout Ron Wright.

Wright is the first baseman for Durham, Tampa Bay's Triple-A team.

With the Devil Rays looking to slash salary, Wright has a good chance of making his major-league debut this year - whether it's via a trade in July or when rosters expand in September.

Former Kennewick High star Heather Thoelke, who helped lead the girls basketball team to the 4A state championship in 2000, has confirmed she is transferring from Eastern Washington University to the University of Idaho.

Thoelke started at times for EWU as a freshman this last season. But she decided to make the move after her coach at Eastern was fired in March.

It doesn't hurt that Debbie Roueche, Thoelke's coach at Kennewick, is now Idaho's top assistant. Roueche's former coach when she played at Lewis-Clark State College, Mike Divilbliss, was hired in March to coach at Idaho.

Thoelke will have to sit out a year.

Pasco High grad David Hileman will transfer from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to Western Washington University this fall, where he'll play men's soccer. Hileman will be a junior.

Columbia Basin College is looking to play host to the NWAACC basketball championships next March for both men and women. That's right - men and women. Thirty-two teams.

To do so, the Tri-Cities Coliseum is willing to put to basketball courts with a curtain in between on the coliseum floor.

Contracts haven't been signed yet, but CBC men's coach Ed Weidenbach hopes to have it done soon.

It would be the first time both men and women would play at the same site.

The WIAA is looking hard at having all state high school golf championships next May in the Tri-Cities area.

Former CBC standout Dave McKay was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame last month.

McKay played at CBC in the late 1960s and then went on to play in the majors with Minnesota, Toronto and Oakland.

He is currently the first base coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.

McKay, a Canadian, was inducted with former Montreal Expos catcher Gary Carter - who is an American.
