Posted April 11, 2000Erikson readies for pro soccer careerLife has gotten pretty hectic for Meotis Erikson. The Kamiakin High graduate hasn't finished school at the University of Notre Dame, but she's already got a job. Erikson made the roster of the Women's United Soccer Association's Boston Breakers team last week. She left South Bend, Ind., on Tuesday for Boston, after spending most of last week packing up her apartment. "I've been moving out, getting things set with my teachers," she said. "After I finish a couple of papers, I'll just have one correspondance course to finish, and that teacher said she'd fax me the final." Playing in the new league will be a thrill for Erikson. "It's going to be a really, really competitive league," she said. "Obviously the national players are good. But the foreign players bring it up to a whole other level." The Breakers have two German nationals, Bettina Weigmann and Maren Meinert, and Norway's Dagny Millgren, who scored the winning goal against the United States in the gold medal game of the Olympics last year. Erikson was a longshot to make the squad because she was selected in the supplemental draft in February. "I found out (I made the team) on a Friday. I thought that my chances were good," she said. "I was really excited. Before I had a meeting with my coach, I knew I made it because I'd heard four girls were cut. The first six girls had been cut about a week before." Erikson also fell into an apartment when three of the Breakers found a place together, only to have one of them get cut. Erikson stepped in to take her place. Boston has played exhibitions against New York, Atlanta and San Jose, going 1-2. She expects the league to take off. "I honestly think it will do well," she said. "Our home opener (at Boston University) is 90 percent sold out." It all begins April 21, when Boston visits the Carolina Courage. On May 5, Boston's home opener will also be against Carolina. |
