Pasco's Bonderman reportedly 'player to be named'

By the Herald staff

If reports are true, Pasco's Jeremy Bonderman will be wearing a Detroit Tigers cap this time next year.

Bonderman, whom the Oakland A's selected out of high school in the first round of the 2001 draft, has been reported by USA Today and the Detroit Free Press to be the "player to be named later" in the Oakland-Detroit-New York Yankees trade that sent Jeff Weaver to the Yankees via Oakland.

In return, the Tigers got first baseman Carlos Peña, reliever Franklyn German and the player to be named later.

But Bonderman, 19, isn't going anywhere soon, according to the Modesto A's, where Bonderman is 4-7 with a 4.08 ERA.

"As far as our front office goes, we don't know," said Modesto assistant general manager Mike Gorrasi. "If (the rumor) is so, we can't say anything until Aug. 22. He's been pitching real well for us. We are making a push for the playoffs and we anticipate for him to be here the entire season."

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound right-hander, did not sign with the A's until Aug. 22, 2001, so the first day he legally would be able to be identified in a trade would be Aug. 22.

"Here in Modesto, we don't control where the players go," Gorassi said. "We hope he stays here, but Oakland makes all the decisions. We provide the place to play and Oakland provides the players. We just do what we have to do until we need to take someone to the airport."

Bondeman is ranked fourth in the California League with 112 strikeouts over 9913 innings. He has given up 86 hits, 57 runs, 45 earned runs, eight home runs and 44 walks.
