Hawks 11, Dust Devils 3

By the Herald staff

BOISE - The Tri-City Dust Devils dropped their final game of the season Wednesday night, falling to the Boise Hawks 11-3 at Memorial Stadium.

The Dust Devils, who finished the season in second place behind Boise in the Northwest League's East Division, ended the year 40-36.

Boise (49-27), which will open the Northwest League championship series tonight at Everett, put the game away early. Matt Craig and Dwaine Bacon each had two-run doubles as the Hawks build an 8-0 lead against Tri-City starter John Tetuan.

Tetuan (2-6) lasted only two-thirds of an inning, giving up all eight runs - seven earned - on seven hits.

Boise starter Justin Jones, a 17-year-old left-hander making his first start of the season, allowed one run on four hits over five innings.

The Dust Devils scored in the third inning on Doug Bernier's RBI single, then added two runs in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Ryan Spilborghs and Walkill Guance, and an RBI single by Sean Barker.

Spilborghs, who ended the season on a eight-game hitting streak, Barker and Hal Bibee each had two hits for the Dust Devils.

Gary Banks and Ronny Cedeno each had three of Boise's 17 hits. Bacon, who also homered, finished with three RBI.

The Dust Devils did get strong relief pitching from Scott Nicholson. The left-hander from Longview tossed 513 scoreless innings.

Boise advanced to the best-of-5 championship series for the second time in two years. The Hawks were swept by Salem-Keizer last season. Everett will be playing for the title for the first time since 1987.
