Ams take goalie with 1st pick

By René Ferrán
Herald staff writer

Tri-City Americans general manager Bob Tory went into Wednesday's Western Hockey League bantam draft in Calgary, Alberta, wanting to upgrade his foward corps.

But apparently the temptation of goaltender Carey Price was too great for Tory, who spent the seventh overall pick on the Williams Lake, British Columbia, product.

Price's selection is a curious one. Price, a 6-foot-2, 160-pounder, was the only goaltender selected in the first two rounds, and Tri-Cities appeared solid at the position with Tyler Weiman next season and a trio of highly-considered prospects - 17-year-olds Chris Holt and Ryan Riddle and 16-year-old Ryan McConnachie, a sixth-round pick a year ago - waiting in the wings.

Tory then loaded up on forwards, using the Americans' next six picks on front-line prospects - including two in the second round, left wing Dave Falk of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Kirk Meaver of Williams Lake.

Only ninth-round pick Justin Fechione, a defenseman from Anchorage, Alaska, would be eligible to play more than five games for the Americans this season. Fechione will be a 16-year-old; all the other Ams draftees are 15.

NOTES: The Vancouver Giants opened the proceedings by trading the third overall pick and a third-rounder to Prince Albert for the No. 1 pick, with which the Giants selected center Gilbert Brule, a hometown product. With the second pick, Vancouver then took another center, Daniel Bertram of Calgary, Alberta, and Prince Albert then took D Mike Gauthier of Vancouver. The Giants were motivated by rumors that another team was looking to deal with P.A. for the

No. 1 pick to take Brule or Bertram. In the fifth round, Vancouver selected defenseman Brandon Brown of Walla Walla. Prince George defenseman Dan Hamhuis was named the WHL Player of the Year and Top Defenseman at a luncheon held during the draft. Other award winners included Portland's Braydon Coburn (rookie of the year), Cam Ward of Red Deer (top goaltender), Ian White (Most Sportsmanlike) and Brent Twordik (top faceoff man) of Swift Current, Bob Lowes of Regina (coach of the year) and Brandin Côté of Spokane (humanitarian).
