Weiman to return to Ams today

By Annie Fowler
Herald staff writer

Tri-City Americans star goalie Tyler Weiman will rejoin the team today, but he still is several days away from playing in a game.

"I feel good and I'm starting to gain weight back," said Weiman, who was diagnosed with mononucleosis Dec. 17. "I had an ultrasound (Monday) to check and see if my spleen and kidneys were back to normal."

Weiman, 18, will meet the team in Lethbridge today. The Americans' five-game eastern road swing begins Friday in Brandon and ends Jan. 15 in Saskatoon.

The three-year Western Hockey League veteran said he first started feeling poorly the last two games before the Christmas break.

"I was tired, getting headaches and my lower back hurt," Weiman said Monday from his home in Lloydminster, Alberta. "When I got home, I knew something wasn't right and I went to the doctor."

While he was ill, Weiman lost 15 pounds, dropping to 150.

"I was looking forward to Christmas and mom's goodies - the candies, cookies and pies," Weiman said. "But I couldn't eat anything. I've gained about five pounds back and I've been active the last few days. This is the worst thing possible, but it came at a good time."

Weiman, who missed five games, was 9-18-0 before the holiday break. He hopes to play soon.

"The doctor said what I do is up to me," Weiman said. "I'm looking forward to playing on the swing and I'm doing everything I can to make that happen."

With Weiman out, the Americans brought in Kevin Dziaduck, who is 2-2 in four games. They waived backup Ryan Senft on Saturday.

"I was shocked when I heard that," Weiman said. "Ryan's the one goalie I've gotten along the best with. I thought they brought (Dziaduck) in to switch off with Ryan while I was gone and that they'd make a decision on what to do when I came back."

Though Dziaduck has been playing well, Weiman said he's not worried about his job.

"I just want to get the skates back on," Weiman said. "I don't feel like I have to push things. (Dziaduck) has been playing for four games. I've been here for three years."

NOTES: Americans captain Ben Kilgour was named the WHL's Western Conference Player of the Month for December. Kilgour, 20, had six goals and 23 points in nine games as Tri-Cities went 6-3-0-0. He had a six-point night against Vancouver on Dec. 28 and finished the month with a plus-11 rating. Regina goalie Josh Harding won the Eastern Conference honor.
