Ams select Ottawa's 8th-round pick
By the Herald staff
The Tri-City Americans selected left winger Josef Vavra, 18, in the second round of the Canadian Hockey League's import draft .
Vavra, 6-foot, 175 pounds, was the Ottawa Senators' eighth-round pick in this last weekend's NHL draft. He joins Norwegian Peter Lorentzen, who will be returning for his second season in the Tri-Cities, as the club's two import players this season.
"I had the opportunity to watch Josef at this past season's Viking Cup and came away very impressed," said Americans general manager Bob Tory. "He's an excellent skater and passer."
The Ams also acquired overage forward Jiri Jakes from the Brandon Wheat Kings for future considerations.
Jakes, a Czech product and a 2001 NHL draft pick of the Boston Bruins, had 16 goals and 34 points last season for the Wheat Kings. It was his second season in the WHL.
He also was a member of the Czech Republic squad at the 2002 World Junior Championships.
"Jiri affords us insurance at both our overage and import situations," Tory said. "He plays a physical style with a good finish around the net."
